Rachmaninov practising: “Arriving at the designated hour of twelve,” he wrote, “I heard an occasional piano sound as I approached the cottage. I stood outside the door, unable to believe my ears. Rachmaninov was practising Chopin’s Étude in thirds, but at such a snail’s pace that it took me a while to recognise it because so much time elapsed between each finger stroke at the next.” Chasins was so fascinated by the slow speed that he looked at his watch to clock what he was hearing. He reported that “twenty seconds per bar was his pace for almost an hour”. Chasins described himself as “rivetted to the spot, quite unable to ring the bell”. If you get a cold winter day that doesn't mean Global Warming isn't real. But if you get some warm water in the gulf, it is the fault of people who don't follow California rules. • Supercharged by climate change: The storm’s intensity was fueled by warm waters due to fossil fuel use. It was the strongest hurricane on record to slam into Florida’s Big Bend region. The atmosphere, warmed by more than a century of fossil fuel pollution, is hotter now than it was in pre-industrial times. https://www.cnn.com/weather/live-news/hurricane-helene-florida-georgia-09-27-24#cm1ks4uqd00003b6sbai9rpvq

@LuFins-Dad said in Kamala’s speech to the Economic Club in Pittsburgh: damn, this is frightening. Maybe we need a colossal failure to put the final nail in the DEI coffin. She could certainly be the anti-DEI poster child. Of course the Chinese could come marching down Main Street before she is through. They have probably already sent a few divisions across our southern border.

@89th said in RIP, Maggie Smith: I always thought of her in the Secret Garden first, not sure why. When I was a kid, it was The Prime of Miss Jean Brody. I had a Scottish friend who was a child extra in that movie back before you young folk were born.

@George-K said in Tomato Soup on $84 million Van Gogh painting: https://juststopoil.org/2024/09/27/sent-down-for-throwing-soup-judge-hehir-turns-state-repression-into-an-art-form/ Sent down for throwing soup? Judge Hehir turns state repression into an art form Press, Uncategorized / September 27, 2024 Two Just Stop Oil supporters who threw tomato soup over Van Gogh’s Sunflowers have been sentenced to prison terms of up to 2 years by Judge Christopher Hehir at Southwark Crown Court today. [1] Phoebe Plummer was jailed for 2 years for the soup throwing plus 3 months for a S7 offence, while Anna Holland received a prison sentence of 20 months. They are also subject to 3 year Criminal Behaviour Orders and are expected to serve at least half of their sentences in custody. In July, Phoebe and Anna were found guilty of causing criminal damage exceeding £5,000 after they threw tins of tomato soup over Vincent van Gogh’s “Sunflowers” painting at the National Gallery in October 2022, although the painting was protected by glass and was unharmed. Judge Hehir preemptively dismissed all legal defences—including the defence of ‘proportionality’ and their Article 10 rights under the Human Rights Act 1998—without hearing any evidence from either side. [2] Seems to me that they got off easy. As deterrents go, it doesn't seem to be working... Activists throw soup on Van Gogh painting again Just Stop Oil supporters have thrown soup over two Vincent van Gogh paintings, hours after two activists were given jail sentences for targeting one of the same works of art. Three protesters threw an orange-coloured soup at Sunflowers 1888 and Sunflowers 1889 in the Poets and Lovers exhibition at the National Gallery in central London. They have been arrested on suspicion of causing criminal damage. Earlier, Phoebe Plummer, 23, was given a two-year jail term, while Anna Holland, 22, got 20 months, for throwing soup over Sunflowers 1888 in October 2022. The National Gallery said the two paintings targeted on Friday had been removed for examination and were found to be undamaged.

It makes sense when you think about it. She has the gift of gab (Irish heritage), spirituality (Indian heritage), and references to coconut trees (Caribbean heritage).

Take a helicopter that can do the job and add to it remote control and autopilot capabilities, and you have a drone that can do the job.

@Jolly said in No National Guard For You!: Somebody takes responsibility... https://nypost.com/2024/06/10/us-news/nancy-pelosi-says-i-take-responsibility-for-not-having-national-guard-at-the-capitol-on-jan-6-video-shows/ Taking responsibility is one thing. Actually having the power to do something is another. There is nothing in the three interviews that I read from above (Joint Chief Chairman, DC Police Chief, Sec. Defense) that say otherwise. I am not blaming President Trump (even though he was the ultimate responsibility. LOL This is not like Japan where the CEO of a company will resign because a lower level staff member got caught doing something wrong)

Talked to BIL this morning. He's on the rural route a tad over an hour east from Tallahassee. He didn't get much rain (unusual for east side), but did get some wind. He only lost one big limb on his place, but there are three trees on the county road. He's meeting his SIL at 8 and they'll cut them off the road. Haven't checked the news about Tallahassee...

Trump has said he will be at a MacDonald's sometime in the next two weeks. While there, he said he thinks he'll take a turn doing fries. That way, he'll have more experience than Harris.

It's easy enough to get hurt trying to do everything right, when it comes to felling, bucking, splitting and stacking. Add in logarithmic stupidity and injury is assured.

Just last year, both Ivory Coast and Ghana received record rainfall prior to the autumn cocoa harvest. Entirely possible that there was a record just before the harvest, but overall, Ghana's rainfall is remarkably consistent over the decades. From what I can see, there's a thing called "Comment K" in the US which restricts strict liability for drugs. In Europe, liability is less strict anyway.
